i will find the gradient or slope of a straight line by using the formula: Y2-Y1/X2-X1
ReplyDelete(this formula is the change in the vertical axis divided by the change in the horizontal axis)
I agree that is how you find gradient. Gradient is used to find change for example change over a period of time.Intercepts is for instnce where a straight line graph either cut the x-axis or the y-axis.
ReplyDeleteI think the x and y intercept are the points where a line or curve cuts the axis. u can find the intercept by using y=mx+c where c is the y intercept.
ReplyDeletein my opinion all for this is correct but do u understand why this need to be done or why do u find the gradient or the y intercept???
ReplyDeleteAs miss was saying in class gradient is very important in life because gradient is everywhere. it is when we walk, when we drive and as we get older, in general it is any change we undergo!!!!
ReplyDeletehey but can someone clarify how/why we use the y-intercept in real life?
ReplyDeletemmm that is a good question? that would probly be where something would most likely be joined. example say you have beams in a house and you need to calculate how to position them to get maximum support from it a graph would be needed. my guess is that the y intercept would likely be the point where the beam comes into contact with the wall. this is jus my opinion correct me if am wrong someone
ReplyDeletewel renjisan dat makes sum kinda sense but the purpose of findin the gradient is for sum kind of change rite....we understand dat part but cum to tink of it,hw is the y-intercept used in real life?????never thought of dat b4...
ReplyDeletewell that is what renjisan was trying to answer for me but his/her answer sounds kinda strange. does anyone else knows what the y intercept is used or represents in real life?
ReplyDeletegradient of a striaght line can be calculated by the equation (y2-y1)/(x2-x1). two pairs of coordinates are found on the line and is simply substituted in the quation and is simplified
ReplyDeletegradient is found because it represents the change that both variables (on the x and y axis) undergo
ReplyDeletea question like y = 2x + 3 wich is a straight line can use the formula y = mx + c
ReplyDeletetherefore
the gradient is m
and the y intercept is 3
the two most important!!
but guys what's the use of finding gradient? y is it so important?
ReplyDeletei think the y intercept is the point where the important rate of change begins. its like cricketer's batting average while playing for a team where the negative side of the y axis represent the batting average before he plays for the team while after the y-axis represents the batting average while on the team. the entire graph will represent batting average for his whole cricket career while the point that crosses the y axis is his average when he joins the team
ReplyDeletewell that was what i think of the y intercept. not sure if i'm correct
ReplyDeletei belive tat an intercept is the point at which a line intersects a coordinate axis....
ReplyDeletewell ppl this might or might not help but to my understanding the x axis is the independent variable(input) and the y axis is the dependent variable(output) ok says the y intercept is like your finish product of something
ReplyDeletebut u cant get that finsihed product onless u start with something jus think of all the things that u do in your everydau life u HVAE to do something in order to get something e.g a car wuoldnt move if it has go gas right so that car is dependant on gas to move right next E.G ent yuh cud tell someones weight(y axis) by looking at their height(x axis) in other words weight is dependant on height to work so the y axis is like what u finish with den
ReplyDeleteI agree wid Weezy that to find the gradient of a straight line is the change in the horizontal axis over the vertical axis...wen we speak of intercept is basically a cut on either axis, be it the vertical or horizontal...gradient is indeed all around us..which is simply a change occurring....the importance in life of finding gradient is to notify dat change lets say in production for a company and the intercept i agree wid renjisan dat it is a finishing..in that i say so cuz let us say we start wid the origin where there is no movement of a car for instance and the car is started and moves up the y-axis..1...2...3...4...5...6 and it stops to me it represents a finishing...it started at 0 and stops at 6..what do u think of dat?
ReplyDeleteQuestion
ReplyDeleteHow do you find the gradient of a straight line?
Gradient = change in y/ change in x
= y2-y1/ x2-x1
Or in the equation y = mx + c, make x the subject of the formula and solve, since m is the gradient
Question
ReplyDeleteWhat is the use of finding gradient?
The use of finding gradient is to find the change of something with respect to another.
Question
ReplyDeleteWhat is the purpose of finding y-intercept?
The purpose of this is that to find the value of y when x=0
Question
ReplyDeleteHow do find the y-intercept?
we find this from the equation y = mx + c where c is the y intercept
.
Quetsion
ReplyDeleteWhat is the meaning of intercept?
For graphs, it is when two line crosses each other and at that very point is the intercept
Swanky Thing you only mentioned gradient for a straight line what happen to a curve since most real life graphs a curves.
ReplyDeleteWell, am not quite sure how to find gradient of curves.. can u help me out?
ReplyDeletegradient of a straight line is given by vertical shift over horizontal distance, if you dont know what that means is change in Y aover change in X
ReplyDeletegradient of a straight line is given by vertical shift over horizomntal distance, if you dont know what that means is simply the change in Y over the change in X
ReplyDeletegradient of a cuvrve is limit tends to zero
ReplyDeleteintercept is where someting meets another object and crosses it
ReplyDeletey-intercept for a straight line is found when you use equn of a straight line i.e
ReplyDeletey=mx+c
where c is the y-intrecept
